Dear David,
Hello from Boston!
I’m Sharmaine, a final year student from Tufts University and fellow Cairo researcher. I finally chanced upon this email to contact you or Fabio Lucchini regarding the documentary Bulaq that was released last year.
My research: “Understanding the Arab Spring from an Urban Studies Perspective” looks at the juxtaposition of the political and urban landscapes in Cairo. Did the wretched urban condition that developed under the Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak regime create the breaking point for the uprising? How will the new regime shape the spatiality of Cairo?
I am in Cairo between March 15-25 and would love to interview and meet you during that period if you are still in El-Misr?
In addition, this research has been part of a program at Tufts called EPIIC, Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship under the Institute of Global Leadership (IGL): It is a rigorous colloquium that uncovers a theme in depth for a year, bringing the most prominent academics, thinkers, decision makers etc. from the field. This year, the theme is “Conflict in the 21st century” and we have studied everything from cyber warfare and drones to the uncertainty and promise that the Arab Spring has presented.
I would love to grab a coffee with you when I’m in town! Your input and familiarity with the city, I am sure, will be tremendously helpful.
Warmest regards,
Sharmaine Oh
